There is a fundamental human need to seek out people like us and form homogeneous communities. It is perfectly natural. People enjoy being around themselves with similar interests, beliefs, language, ability, wealth and income status.
As initially awkward as it may seem, I submit we find our true richness in heterogeneous communities where people have diverse interests, beliefs, language, ability, wealth and income status. God fashioned a diverse human family and it should be reflected in the communities we belong to. Since our personal identify is so closely linked to the communities we belong to, our identity will grow as we participate in diverse communities. It makes us more tolerant and accepting and flexible, and less judgmental.
As this country becomes more diverse, let us celebrate our diversity, and seek out heterogenous communities. It will enrich the quality of our lives and we will be the better for it.
