In the developmentally disabled field professionals will tell you that the primary needs that their clients have are housing, employment, and transportation. These are indeed important but meeting only them leads to a very shallow life. A higher quality of life is one that is filled with meaning relationships: family, friends, and partners. A even higher level of quality of life is civic and social involvement. The highest level is the free and spontaneous contemplation of life, the world, and everything in it. Right now, my focus on developing meaningful relationships: close friends and a partner, though I am quite active in self-advocacy for causes affecting people with developmental disabilities.
