Hope is the capacity to wait for some expectant event or person. It is the great motivating force in life. Hope comes from deep within our heart and pumps blood to our brain that constructs all manner of plans and schemes to reach our hopes. In this hope differs from goals or objectives which are more intellectual.
Hope allows us to persevere and endure all manner of frustrations, delays, and setbacks to reach our destinations. Hope empowers us to pick us up off the ground when we haven fallen flat on our face. Hope gives us dignity and purpose. Hope allows us to see the big picture beyond our present circumstances.
What is really hard is when we lose hope. That is really painful. We may have faced disappoints so great that our hopes are dashed. Rekindle hope in such circumstances is hard, especially when the wounds run deep. There are times when I felt so utterly overwhelmed that I lost all hope. Turning to others and drawing on others’ hope helped me restore my hope. It wasn’t easy. It takes courage to embrace hope once you have lost it. It is also painful. The thought I don’t want to be hurt again, so I won’t hope, is a tough thought to shake, but it is my experience that it is something I have to move pass.
Having hope doesn’t make life easy but it can give life purpose, dignity, and energy. My great hope is in Jesus and that he will work miracles in my life.
